What's Out There: Vintage Dinner Roll Cozy

Supplies:
WOT201601-1

  • 6 12” circles of cotton fabric
  • coordinating thread
  • small snaps
  • sewing needle
  • sewing machine
  • pencil, chalk pencil, or washable quilting pencil

Steps:

    1. Prewash fabric.
    2. Using 12 inch template, trace and cut out six circles of fabric, three of each color, or in any combination as you prefer. A plate or your microwave tray may work. A little larger won’t hurt, smaller will probably not work well.
    3. With right sides together, sew two circles together, taking a 1/4 inch seam. Leave an opening of approximately 2 inches for turning. Tie threads or backstitch. Repeat with other four circles.
    4. Snip the seam allowance around the circle, every inch or so. Trim the seam down to 1/8 inch. Turn your circles right side out.
    5. Press your seams around the circles flat, paying particular attention to the opening you used for turning. After pressing, you will want to hand stitch these openings closed. (Or just press well, pin them and skip to topstitching.)

    1. Returning to your sewing machine, topstitch 1/4 inch from the edge of the circle around all three circles.
    2. Fold the circle in half and then into thirds and press to mark the sixths.
    3. Stack the marked circle on another circle with the same fabric side up (if you used contrasting fabric). You can pin through all thicknesses, to keep them from slipping during the next step.
    4. Sew along these lines through both circles (four layers of fabric).
    5. With the third circle, fold the circle in half and then into thirds and press to mark the sixths. Mark a point 2.5” from the edge on each line (pin, chalk, disappearing marker, whatever). Lay the marked circle on the two circles that have been sewn together. The marked lines on the one circle should be centered between the stitched lines of the two circles, with the 2.5”marks on top. Fold the bottom circle out of the way as you are only going to sew through the top two circles. Pin together.

  1. On each line, sew from the edge toward the center on the lines for 2.5”, stopping at your mark.
  2. Turn the circles over, and place them so that one of the sewing lines runs horizontally (from 3 to 9 on a clock) Sew on the snaps. Two male snaps go at 12 o’clock, 1 female snap goes at 4 and one goes at 8. The snap placement should correspond to the centers between the stitching lines.
  3. Finally, pull up the layers, snap them together and you are ready to set your table and offer your family and guests rolls in this vintage cozy. Unsnap to launder and store flat.
