Machine Beading by Sheila Hanson

In this class you’ll learn how to use your sewing machine to sew beads and sequins on your garments or projects. Sheila will also show how to use metallic thread, what to look for in the thread and quick stitch designs to embellish garments and other projects. This will be a demo-only class as each machine is a little different and you’ll learn the technique so you can adapt it to your machine.

In 1953 I joined 4-H and sewed a dirndl skirt as my first project. I’d sew and cry, sew and whine because I wanted to learn to cook, not sew. My mother persisted with pressure only a mother can press. She told me some day I’d be glad I knew how to sew and that I’d learn to cook because that’s what I really wanted to do. Mother was right. I went to culinary school and became a chef.

Sewing always frustrated me because I wanted the machine to do more than it could. I finally gave it up because the machines were difficult and annoying. Then along came computerized machines and a whole new world opened. I’ve been back at it for about six years now and continue to experiment with new ways to let my machine do the work. I forgot to mention I am grateful my mother made me learn because without that foundation, I wouldn’t have been able to pick up and move ahead with the real fun of sewing.
