At the Meeting – February 6, 2010

Joyce Lee-Westdal said she’s fluent in “flea market,” as she spoke what seemed to be quite passable Japanese. It is through her travels to Japan and visits to flea markets that Joyce has built her kimono knowledge, collection and business. We enjoyed a detailed presentation covering the different styles, traditions, and wearing of kimono. Joyce’s extensive collection illustrated the diversity of kimono in terms of construction, fabrication, and fabrics. And best of all we had the opportunity to see kimono up close.

Diane Gilleland taught 17 participants how to make Kanzashi Flowers. Diane demonstrated three designs from her book Kanzashi in Bloom. We all enjoyed making our own flowersto wear or use as embellishments on other projects. “We had so much fun making Diane’s flowers this afternoon. Boy, the creative juices are flowing now,” well said by Rosalyn Sprague.
