What's Out There: Spring Birds
I love Spring! We have finally opened our bedroom window overnight, and wake to the sounds of birds chirping in the morning. Lovely! We have a favorite who makes such a happy little morning song. I’d love to know what he is. So far, we’ve downloaded 23 Pacific Northwest bird songs, and still cannot figure out what our little bird is. I guess that leaves me free to picture him any way I choose. Here are a variety of ways to interpret birds.
I know many of us are ‘multi-craftual,’ so there’s options for yarn, fabric, and paper.
Yarn Bird. This cute little bird can be made with very little yarn. The tutorial on YouTube is very detailed and easy to follow. The little bird would be cute in a nest made from the clothesline cord and fabric and used as a centerpiece.
Fabric Birds. This little bird is so easy it doesn’t even need instructions. I can see him made with a bit longer legs and used as a bookmark.
This website has instructions and patterns for amazingly realistic felt birds of the NE United States. From barn swallows to quail, and hens to peacocks, the patterns are free to download. Start now, and you could have a bird themed Christmas tree!
Here is a simple bird for putting on a branch.
Paper Bird. An owl made from a purchased paper lantern would be a cute addition to a patio or a kid’s room.
Bird Garlands. The internet is full of ways to make a bird themed garland, like this paper version using maps. I love the idea of the hole reinforcers being used for the string.

Bird House. If your new little friends need a home, here is a pattern and tutorial to make fabric bird houses.

Happy Sewing!
