Alençon, Guipure, Chantilly, Oh My! BY Debbie Utberg

In this class you will learn and see the difference between these laces. Some generalized techniques for working with each will be shared. For “hands on” learning you will make half of a half-scale guipure lace skirt. Debbie will bring some of her custom “lace work” for your inspection.

CLASS Preparation: none

SUPPLIES:

  • Quality hand sewing needles
  • Pins
  • Thread (for sample making purposes, thread color does not matter)
  • Thread conditioner or wax
  • Pressing ham
  • Sewing machine, 3 may share
  • Iron, 3 or 4 may share

KIT FEE: $15
Kit includes 13” x 9” piece of guipure lace, 1 half-scale skirt front, 1 half-scale skirt back, marked underlining for skirt pieces, and handouts. Instructor will provide silk thread for basting.

Debbie’s Utberg’s professional sewing career began in 1977 when she was asked to sew a wedding gown and discovered the value of her sewing skills to others. For many years, her business was an intermittent, part-time entity.  “Debra Dianne – Fine Dressmaking and Bridal Couture” is now located in historic downtown Gresham. This location offers maximum work/life balance and space for teaching the fine art of custom sewing.  

Debra has been actively involved with the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP) for many years. Currently she is serving as President for ASDP National.
